Books for Hikers

My dear friend Linda “eArThworm” Patton has just set up shop at www.booksforhikers.com, where she is moving and expanding her long-time Backcountry Bibliography to include many more written resources for hikers. For those not in the know, Linda’s a retired librarian and just can’t help herself. Yup, she’s got shelves, bookcases, and stacks of these books around her house. So visit Linda’s site and take advantage of this tremendous research resource!

Big Gum Swamp Trail CLOSED

Just back from a week on the road and visited the Upper Suwannee valley today. The good news is the Bugaboo fire is almost out, now down to about 100 firefighters mopping up tiny outbreaks in the Osceola National Forest and adjacent lands. The bad news is the Bugaboo pretty much erased the pine forest and bayheads of the Big Gum Swamp Wilderness Area, which means the end of the Big Gum Swamp Trail until someone decides to blaze it again after the forest grows back, which will take a couple of years.

This affects the following guidebooks of mine:
The Hiking Trails of Florida’s National Parks, Forests, and Preserves
Pages 147-148
50 Hikes in North Florida
Hike 11 (page 100)
Hiker’s Guide to the Sunshine State
Hike NF-18 (page 167)

If you have these guidebooks, please note that this trail may be closed for several years, if not permanently. I’ll keep you posted here if I hear otherwise.

Back in action!

My latest book!Today’s National Trails Day hike on the Florida Trail at Withlacoochee River Park marked my return to the hiking life. I’d been offline for more than a month squeezing every moment of my spare time into the completion of Exploring Florida’s Botanical Wonders, my latest book. It’s done! It’ll be next year before it hits the bookstore, but meantime, my new work with Johnny Molloy has hit the bookshelves: The Hiking Trails of Florida’s National Forests, Parks, and Preserves. Check it out!

Also, you might have noticed the revised look to the site. I’ll be adding new hikes AND making some radical behind-the-scenes changes this summer to make this a truly useful online resource. Stay tuned!
