Sandra Friend and John Keatley are accomplished outdoor writers and travel writers with a special focus on inspiring people to get outside and enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re looking to put together a booklet for your guests or content to help market the outdoors in your region, we’re available to help as consultants.
Some of the projects we’ve worked on include:
- Developing unique website content about a specific niche in the outdoors.
- Providing photography of outdoor recreation locations for a website.
- Interviewing local business owners to produce editorial for a promotional piece.
- Inventorying trails in a region to provide written and photographic content for use in tourism marketing efforts.
- Paid blogging for companies marketing Florida destinations and vacations.
- Providing itineraries for use in marketing pieces for visitors to plan driving tours based on outdoor recreation destinations in Florida.
- Writing niche guidebooks.
When working on a research trip, we share our explorations with our audiences on Facebook, Twitter (Sandra’s and our Florida Hikes! account), and other social media such as Flickr, Instagram, Pinterest, and Vine. We do this to help give our readers ideas for new places to visit while helping you spread the word about your great places.
When we post content from any paid efforts on our website, we do disclose to our readers that we’re working on a paid project, just as we do when we receive products for testing or comps at accommodations or restaurants.
How it Works
Decide on the type of project you’re interested in having us help you with, and get in touch. Although our strong suit is Florida, we’re working on projects outside the state as well. We don’t have set-in-stone fees. We’re happy to work with you to find something we can do within your budget that is mutually beneficial: worth our while to travel to your destination to share it with our readers, and worth your while to use our expertise and audience to help you encourage more of your visitors and guests to enjoy the outdoors.

From her first ride on the glass-bottom boats of Silver Springs at the age of three, Sandra Friend has been enchanted by the outdoors in Florida. After annual visits to Florida, always centered around the beauty of Florida’s parks and natural attractions, her family moved to Ocala in 1977, where she graduated from Forest High School and Central Florida Community College. Returning to the mountains of the Northeast, Sandra completed a B.S. in Information Science at the University of Pittsburgh, with a special focus on human-computer interaction. Since 1995, she’s been writing about the outdoors for an ever-growing audience. Returning to Florida as a resident in 1999, Sandra has authored/co-authored 29 books, most of which focus on travel and the outdoors in Florida, as well as three smartphone apps, including the popular Florida State Parks. She created the content for the current Ocala National Forest website under contract for the USDA Forest Service. Sandra serves on the Board of Directors of the Society of American Travel Writers, overseeing the Freelance Council as Chair, and has served on numerous other boards and committees related to travel, including chairing the VISIT FLORIDA advisory board on Nature-based Tourism and serving on the board of Friends of Florida State Parks and the Florida Outdoor Writers Association. In 2013, she received the Adventurer of the Year Award from a nationwide women-in-the-outdoors organization, the Trail Dames. Learn more about Sandra on her website.
John Keatley went on his first backpacking trip in the Ocala National Forest as a Boy Scout in the 1970s and became an Eagle Scout soon after, spending his summers as a camp counselor at Camp La-No-Che. John remains an active outdoorsman to this day. A member of the Space Shuttle program team for 33 years, he has decades of experience coordinating complex workflows. Together, John and Sandra started off on a Appalachian Trail thru-hike and completed 525 miles of backpacking during the spring of 2012. They served as volunteer coordinators and leaders in 2013 for the 22nd annual Big O Hike around Lake Okeechobee, Florida’s longest running hiking event. John’s varied expertise includes bicycle touring, camping, sailing, SCUBA, SUP, triathlons, kayaking, and canoeing, as well as wrangling a fleet of vintage VW camper vans over the years. John’s diverse background has enabled us to greatly expand upon our outdoor coverage on this website. John is a member of the Florida Outdoor Writers Association, and has co-authored two guidebooks with Sandra. Learn more about John on LinkedIn.
