After eight years of guiding visitors to the best of Florida’s outdoors through FloridaHikes.com, Florida Hikes! now adds location-based text and audio descriptions of its recommended outdoor destinations through a new partnership with Niantic Labs at Google and its Field Trip app.
Field Trip helps people discover the hidden and unique happenings and locations in the world around them using Google’s geo-location technology. Through mobile devices, Field Trip offers users information on landmarks and local history, fun facts about art and architecture, and much more as they come across these locations in their daily lives.
Founded by John Hanke, creator of Google Earth, Niantic Labs is a startup within Google focused on using mobile technology to encourage discovery and healthy, active lifestyles while creating adventures on foot.
“Florida Hikes! brings a wealth of detailed knowledge to Field Trip of the exciting adventures to be had across the great outdoors in Florida.” said Carl Damerow, Field Trip Partnership Manager, Niantic Labs at Google.
With Field Trip installed on your smartphone and set to audio mode, it will alert you to what’s around you, reading descriptions provided by a broad range of publishers. With Florida Hikes! now a part of the mix, you’ll be treated to descriptions of parks, trails, campgrounds, and other natural features as you drive or walk within range of these physical locations.
We’re very excited about this new partnership with Google and hope you’ll find our audio-based, location-aware information on Field Trip another way to let us help you get outdoors more.
