As of February 10, the following lock crossing procedure is in place for hikers crossing the new section of the Florida Trail along Kissimmee River between KICCO WMA and Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park:
1) Contact Kim Willis at SFWMD one week in advance of your planned arrival date at 800-432-2045 x3333 or by email. For long distance hikers northbound, that would be from John Stretch Park. For southbound long distance hikers, from either Tosohatchee or the Green Swamp.
2) When you arrive at the lock, sound the horn to alert the lock tender. Temporarily, there is a blow horn on each side of the structure. Those will be made permanent with an electric connection in near future.
3) There are signs directing what to do once the horn is sounded; eg. hiker will wait at the crossing for lock tender to come and unchain the crossing. Lock tender will re-chain once the hiker is through.
The lock can only be crossed during posted operating hours. Do not cross the lock during off-hours, and do not trespass on the lock access road heading north from the lock.
