REI announced today that they’ll be opening their second Florida store in the spring of 2017 in Winter Park, Florida. The new REI Winter Park location will be built on the site of Chamberlin’s, which according to the Orlando Sentinel, will be moving to Colonial Drive, in Winter Park Village along US 17-92.
As REI’s prime market is you – backpackers, cyclists, campers, and paddlers – expect a mix of great outdoor gear to get you out on Florida’s trails. REI staff offer workshops all year round, ranging from outdoor skills to specific use of technical gear like the GoPro cameras. They also bring in guest speakers. We’ve been regulars at the REI Jacksonville store, providing workshops on How to Hike the Florida Trail since they opened in 2013. We look forward to being able to do so in our own backyard.
According to their press release, at 25,000 square feet, the new store will help outfit and educate nearly 9,000 active members for a variety of local outdoor adventures from biking the Cady Way Trail to paddling the many local lakes.
With the opening of each new store, REI deepens its support of the local outdoor community. REI Jacksonville invested $20,000 in four nonprofit partners in 2015, which included improving signage and campsites along the Florida National Scenic Trail in partnership with the Florida Trail Association.
REI will employ at least 50 outdoors-minded staff in Winter Park. Watch their job site for the opportunity to apply.
