Okeechobee’s Last Wild Shore

November 22, 2015    Sandra Friend

Hiking Lake Okeechobee’s ancient shoreline is a surprise and a delight. The trail bobs. It weaves. It curves around naturally scoured waterways, and tunnels deeply through a tropical understory.

Primrose and the Big O Hike

Primrose in Kenansville

January 22, 2015    John Keatley

Our first outing with Primrose this hiking season was a trip to the Big O Hike. It rained, of course, in both directions to and from Okeechobee. But we had a splendid road trip in our VW camper.

Pasco County Bug Jam

The dune buggy as a canvas for an artist

November 13, 2014    John Keatley

At the 2014 Pasco County Bug Jam, we spent hours walking up and down the rows of vintage VWs. This year’s event was bigger and better than before, with lots of dune buggies on display.

Cars in the Garden

At the annual British Car Show in Mead Garden

June 14, 2014    John Keatley

A few weeks before our trip to Great Britain, we visited the 31st Annual Central Florida British Car Club show held at Mead Gardens in Winter Park, enjoying the array of classic cars beneath the live oak canopy.

Grand opening of the Dunnellon Trail

Ribbon cutting on the new Dunnellon Trail

May 17, 2014    Sandra Friend

On May 16, 2014, DEP’s Office of Greenways & Trails opened a new bridge and trail along the Cross Florida Greenway, the Dunnellon Trail, providing a crucial connector for the Florida Trail.

In Bloom at Epcot

Garden houses in the butterfly garden

April 24, 2014    Sandra Friend

In March, we participated in the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival as invited speakers, talking about Florida hiking. It was delightful to reach a new audience who enjoys the outdoors.

Kicking off Hiker Season with Primrose

January 29, 2014    John Keatley

On January 5th, we loaded up Primrose and headed south, traveling parallel to the Florida Trail for much of the trip, starting out at Christmas. Driving south of Tosahatchee, we continued through the Deseret Ranch where we spotted our first two Florida Trail thru-hikers walking up the highway. Although they are not keeping online journals, …

The 2014 Florida Trail thru-hiker Kickoff

January 10, 2014    Sandra Friend

When we started hearing a lot of buzz about friends and friends of friends headed to the Florida Trail this season, we figured that our new book The Florida Trail Guide and the talks we’d done at venues like ALDHA and Trail Dames had worked some magic. Sure enough, nearly a dozen people we knew …

Five Star Trails Gainesville & Ocala has launched

Five Star Trails Gainesville & Ocala

December 12, 2013    Sandra Friend

While we were roaming the trails of South Florida, a box of books arrived at our home: our author copies of Five Star Trails Gainesville & Ocala! We started working on this guide to the best trails in the Gainesville and Ocala vicinity last fall, nibbling away at hikes at the south end of the …

The Big O, Differently

John and Sandy at the Big O kickoff

December 3, 2013    Sandra Friend

After a dozen years of attending, the Big O Hike had become a welcome routine, a time to gather with friends. This year was very different. Being in charge meant having to worry about both the big picture and the details.

Florida natives share John Muir’s landscapes on film

July 3, 2013    Sandra Friend

Sliding, backpacks on, down steep slopes covered with snow. Wading, waist-deep, through the icy waters of a mountain stream. Plunging into crystal clear lakes reflecting the beauty of the snow-capped Sierra. Relaxing in broad meadows beneath blue skies. With their cameras capturing landscapes all hikers dream about, Ric and Jen Serena immersed themselves for nearly …

The Harold Store

April 18, 2013    John Keatley

Back in camp on Day 3 of the Panhandle Trace Hike, we met up with Gail and Sally. Since we had to move Primrose to our next campsite – and we had to kill time, since someone was still occupying it – we a took detour to the Harold Store. En route I realized that …
