During the month of March, the Florida Trail will be broken in two at a very critical juncture in the middle of the Kissimmee section, between Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park and KICCO WMA. This will affect all Florida Trail thru-hikers as well as section hikers tackling the Kissimmee section.
A little over a year ago, flooding on the Kissimmee River breached a dike that the Florida Trail followed, closing the trail for many months until an alternate route was found. A new route was blazed along the northern boundary of the state park to lead up to the S-65A lock crossing, and that reroute is now permanent.
This temporary closure is due to a culvert repair to a park road crossing Pine Island Slough, one of the deeper sloughs within Kissimmee Prairie Preserve State Park. The closure takes effect on March 1, 2019. See the map below.
