Last fall, John and I met up with an old friend while looking out over the shimmering waters of the Intracoastal Waterway in Palm Valley. Both John and Barbara Golden had lost their mothers to Alzheimer’s, so there was much to discuss. Barbara wanted to do something epic to remember her mother, and as an avid paddleboarder, she quizzed us about the viability of getting through Brevard County by water. Could it be done?
The answer was yes, of course. A couple months later Barbara launched her journey, paddling south on weekends with friends.
The idea was to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s, so her project has taken on a life of its own, and now you can join in as well. Full details are below.
Stand Up Paddleboarders Travel Florida Waterway Raising Funds for Alzheimer’s Association
The public is invite to join a group of stand up paddle boarders for an adventure called Something I Will Never Forget, an organized paddleboard journey along the Intracoastal Waterway from St. Augustine to Palm Beach.
Founded by Anna Marks and Barbara Golden of St. Augustine, and Cynthia Bethoney of Orlando, Something I will Never Forget is a not-for-profit corporation providing memorable and physically challenging paddle board experiences that encourage healthy living while raising money and creating awareness of the goals for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Paddlers are welcome to participate with either SUP or kayak along on the Something I Will Never Forget journey. Registration for each paddle is $35 if you have your own equipment and $55 if a paddle board is rental is required (includes all equipment). Each paddle boarder must have a safety leash, PFD and whistle. Water shoes are recommended for all paddlers.
The Something I Will Never Forget journey began in St. Augustine, Florida on October 13 and the group paddled for two days to Bing’s Landing in Palm Coast. Since then, the group paddled in November from Bing’s Landing to Gamble Rogers State Park, then on to Tomoka State Park at Ormond Beach and ended at Seabreeze Park at sunset on November 11th.
“Being on the water gives you great strength and a sense of calmness”, says Anna Marks, co-founder of Something I Will Never Forget. “This paddle has already been great fun and challenging and we have had several others that have joined us and are now part of our journey on nearly every paddle scheduled. We hope that others will become part of our cause, join the adventure and embark on their own journey for something they will never forget.”
Due to the generosity of sponsors, May Realty & Resort Rentals, Historic Tours of America, Dutch Built Construction and many other, 85% of the paddlers registrations fees go to Alzheimer’s Association.
Not able to paddle? Come out and cheer us on, sponsor one of our paddles, or donate to Alzheimer’s Association in our name.
