August 17 will mark the grand opening of the new Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve Research & Education Headquarters. Formerly located near the marina in Apalachicola, it has moved to a new facility in neighboring Eastpoint near the end of the bridge to St. George Island.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held next Wednesday, August 17, at 10:30 AM, with facility tours open to the public until noon. The new NERR facility is at 108 Island Drive, Eastpoint, not far from where you can watch oystermen on the bay.
The nature trail at the former Apalachicola NERR nature center & headquarters site – one of the finest short walks in the area for experiencing all of the habitats along the edge of Apalachicola Bay, inside the Reserve – is in need of an organization to “adopt a trail” to continue maintenance of the boardwalk and general cleanup of the area. It’s a beautiful trail, excellent for birding. If you can be of assistance in keeping this trail open to the public, please get in touch with the folks at NERR! Thank you.
