According to trail maintainers in the area, the Florida Trail has been relocated in the vicinity of The 88 Store in the Ocala National Forest. The thru-trail now passes directly behind The 88 Store and within sight of FR 11 south of CR 316 for a short stretch, making it easier to access services at the store.
The Western Connector of the Florida Trail – connecting the Western Corridor with the main route through the Ocala National Forest – now follows the former thru-trail route up to a new junction near FR 11 north of The 88 Store. There is a kiosk at the junction.
Given the lack of water sources along this section, The 88 Store is a crucial stop. Northbound hikers on the Western Connector can follow the the blue blaze to reach the The 88 Store, which starts at a signpost that says “water”. Southbound hikers planning to hike the Western Corridor need to follow the NEW route of the Florida Trail south of the junction to most easily reach The 88 Store.
