Constructing a fine home on a protected shore in 1891, Commodore Ralph Middleton Munroe spent his latter years designing and sailing yachts.
The city of Miami – and its tony enclave of Coconut Grove – grew up around his cherished retreat, The Barnacle, situated in the dense jungle of the Miami Hammock.

About the Park
Little remains of the grand forest that the Commodore loved, but his estate, now sandwiched between condos and neighborhoods, protects the last major remnant of Miami’s original tropical forest.
It also offers a glimpse into Munroe’s life through a tour of his home.
