Sometimes, life gives you pause. That happened a month ago for us, when a planned two weeks hiking on the Florida Trail in the Panhandle morphed into a rapid rush to return to Ocala because my mother, who’d just celebrated her birthday, was in rapid decline due to the cancer she’d fought for four years.

Two weeks later, she was gone. I’m still in shock and still can’t say much about it except sometimes, everything else goes out the window and you just have to be there for the people in your life. Hiking, and writing, wasn’t at all important in that cocoon of just being there every moment. Thanks to friends and family for so much emotional support, especially from John, of course. And the kind folks at Legacy House in Ocala, Hospice of Marion County, for making it easier on all of us, especially Mom.

So if you’re wondering why you haven’t seen anything from us on this website this past month, I haven’t had the heart for it. Perhaps soon. John’s written some cool stories I need to edit and of course we’re backlogged on writing the hikes we’ve done. We’ve had just enough energy to share photos on social media daily, but our big book project is a month behind, which means some juggling of priorities this summer.

Life happens.
