During their first-ever bat monitoring program at Picayune Strand State Forest, FWC found a rare and endangered species – the bonneted bat, Florida’s largest bat.

Protecting a piece of the Big Cypress ecosystem, this vast swamp forest – nearly 73,000 acres – was put together from thousands of pieces of swampland sold to unsuspecting buyers as part of Golden Gate Estates nearly 50 years ago.
