Directions
From Interstate 95 exit 77 for Northlake Blvd in Palm Beach Gardens, head west on Northlake Blvd for 10 miles, then turn left onto 140th Ave N. In 2.6 miles, the entrance will be on the left side of the road. Continue to the southwest corner of the parking lot to find the trailhead.
Hike
Look for a trailhead kiosk at the southwestern corner of the parking lot to begin the hike. A concrete sidewalk leads past the kiosk.
Reach a wooden boardwalk in 200 feet. Follow this impressive walkway as it leads across a grassy prairie pond towards a small island of trees.
Boardwalk into the hammockAirplants cling to heavy oak branches overhead as the boardwalk passes through a tiny shade-filled tree island, a tropical hammock covered with palmettos.
On its far side, a platform with benches overlooks wetlands and a variety of birds attracted to the open water.
OverlookHead back towards the trailhead and use set of stairs to depart the boardwalk, taking an unmarked grassy path northward.
Follow along a wooden fenceline for a tenth of a mile before reaching another boardwalk at the other end of the parking area.
Side pathThis boardwalk spans deeper water where clusters of alligator flag thrive, producing long stalks with attractive purple inflorescences in the summertime.
At its opposite end, a sidewalk cuts through a patch of pine forest.
Wind past cocoplums, gallberry, and dahoon holly, reaching the edge of a sports field in a hundred feet.
Prairie boardwalkTo access the preserve’s northern trail, walk east alongside the fields to an opening in the fence marked with a sign.
Follow a wide path through the woods, then trace the perimeter of a grassy lawn for a tenth of a mile to the edge of the woods.
Fence gap alongside the ballfieldsA pine needle-strewn corridor curves across verdant pine flatwoods for a quarter mile to a western entrance alongside 143rd Drive.
To the south, a mowed fenceline looks like it may offer a loop route, but it dead ends at a locked gate in 0.2 mile.
Turn around here to retrace your steps back to the parking lot.
Pine flatwoodsAn additional linear trail shared with equestrians can be found by heading south from the boardwalk stairs.
This route follows a wide, mowed pathway flanked by wooden fences through a mesic flatwoods community for 0.4 mile to a locked gate at 143rd Drive.
